For the most part, carbon resources such as petroleum satisfied 20th century's needs in energy and materials,However, the recent rapid economic growth of developing countries, primarily in Asia, is causing a grave shortage of resources. These shortages, in turn, cause price increases. One of the keys to mitigate these issues is a better and more sustainable use of the diverse carbon resources available. Within this context, coal is a very important carbon source. Coal can be found in many parts of the world with recoveraable coal reserves estimated to last for many more years. Further advances in comprehensive coal science and technology for a cleaner and more diverse use of coal are of utmost importance.
The development of such technologies will make it possible to effectively divert petroleum and natural gas resources to usages other than as a soure of energy. The purpose of this Global COE program is to develop a transdisciplinary educational and academic framework to train young advancedresearchers in modern coal science and technology. The framework encompasses such areas as effective resource management, environmental studies, material utilization and product development from coal.
